Demystifying Bats in North Carolina
Bats are found around the world including in our own backyards. Bats in NC are nocturnal, insect-eating predators that play a pivotal role in our ecosystem. Join us as we demystify bats, learn about their contribution to our world and how researchers are working to study and protect this unique group of flying mammals.
Presenter: Lindsey Zarecky
Lindsey is the Vice President of Conservation and Research at the Greensboro Science Center, a position she has held since 2016 when the department was created. Lindsey has worked at the GSC since 2008 in various capacities including grant writing and public speaking. She has worked multiple roles and has overseen various operational aspects of the GSC. Lindsey’s BS and MS are in Biology. Her master’s was focused on human disturbances to local insect eating bat species. Her current work is built off of that concept and all the current conservation and research programs at the GSC are focused around human impacts on native species. Work takes places around the globe, in NC and even on-site at the GSC. While she still works with bats, her list of taxa has grown substantially to include iguanas, snakes, small rodents, freshwater mussels, and butterflies. Her passion is working alongside others to establish mitigation options to protect and conserve the natural spaces that have been overtaken by human activities.
