January Program: The Life and Legacy of T Gilbert Pearson

  • Hege Library at Guilford College 5800 West Friendly Avenue Greensboro, NC, 27410 United States (map)

Please join us for a special presentation on the life and legacy of T. Gilbert Pearson, one of the most influential figures in American ornithology and wildlife conservation. During the presentation we will have the unique opportunity to not only explore his remarkable contributions but also view some of the actual specimens from his bird collection, graciously provided by the Quaker Archives.

T. Gilbert Pearson (1873–1943) was a trailblazing conservationist, educator, and ornithologist. Born in Indiana, Pearson grew up with a love for nature that would define his life’s work. After moving to North Carolina, he attended Guilford College, where he was inspired to further his studies in biology. His passion for birds led him to co-found the National Audubon Society in 1905, which became one of the most prominent organizations advocating for the protection of bird species and their habitats. He dedicated much of his career to wildlife preservation, particularly at a time when bird populations were severely threatened by hunting and habitat loss.

Pearson’s scientific and advocacy work played a crucial role in shaping conservation policies, including federal protections for migratory birds. His legacy is still visible today, not only in the ongoing efforts of the Audubon Society but also in the countless conservation initiatives he helped inspire.

As we delve into Pearson’s life, we'll also take a closer look at his contributions to ornithology through some of the bird specimens that he collected and studied, now preserved in the Quaker Archives.

We hope you will enjoy this glimpse into the extraordinary life and work of T. Gilbert Pearson.

Presenters will be Jack Jezorek and Allen Rogers
