SUNDAY AFTERNOON NATURE WALK: Peabody Park, UNCG Campus
Sunday, September 15th, 2 to 4 pm
Peabody Park, a 34-acre green space on the UNCG campus, offers a unique blend of natural habitats and recreational spaces. Established in 1901, it's one of the oldest parts of the campus, serving as a living laboratory for environmental studies and a peaceful retreat for students, faculty, and visitors.
Distance: roughly one mile of paved path walking.
For parking the best option is park on Aberdeen Terrace and walk across W. Market St. We will start at the corner of Gray Dr. and W. Market St.
Habitat Insights:
Peabody Park offers a diverse range of habitats, including mature hardwood forests, open fields, and small water bodies, all of which support a variety of bird life. Each habitat provides unique opportunities to observe different species:
- Forest Areas: Home to species like the Carolina Chickadee, Red-bellied Woodpecker, and Tufted Titmouse. These areas provide ample food and nesting sites.
- Open Fields: Look for American Robins and Eastern Bluebirds, which prefer foraging in open areas with short grass.
- Water Bodies: Though smaller in size, we will encounter 5 streams. These areas can attract species such as the Belted Kingfisher and the Great Blue Heron.
- All of these habitats are filled with a variety of native plants that we will observe and discuss throughout our walk.
We'll conclude our nature walk with a brief discussion of the species we've encountered, sharing any exciting sightings or interesting behaviors observed. This is also a great time to ask any lingering questions about bird identification, behavior, or conservation efforts in Peabody Park.
Be sure to bring water, wear comfortable walking shoes, and dress appropriately for the weather. We look forward to exploring the natural beauty of Peabody Park with you! The walk is free and all are welcome to join us!
