Sunday Afternoon Nature Walk

SUNDAY AFTERNOON NATURE WALK

OFF THE BEATEN PATH: GREEN HILL CEMETERY

Sunday, April 14, 3 to 5 pm

Adjoining the Fisher Park neighborhood and on the edge of downtown Greensboro, Green Hill is the city's oldest public cemetery. It is the resting place of many local historical figures, including T. Gilbert Pearson and his wife Elsie.

Green Hill is also home to many interesting plants, native and non-native. Many of these were planted by the late Bill Craft, Audubon member and conservationist. Bill's work and that of others have made Green Hill into an unofficial arboretum. It is fitting that our walk will be led by Anna Craft, Bill's granddaughter. Anna is a faculty member in UNCG's Jackson Library and advisor for the UNCG Audubon chapter.

Our walk will be largely on the paved cemetery roads save for the few times we'll walk on the grass, for example to view Pearson's grave site. We'll take notice of the many trees and shrubs, many marked with identifying signs. We should also encounter the many birds that use the canopy trees there and we may well find some spring migrants.

What a wonderful way to spend an April afternoon, taking in a bit of history as well as nature. Bring your binoculars as well as your camera/phone. This walk off-the-beaten path is not to be missed. Plan to join us.

Green Hill Cemetery's address is 901 Wharton St., 27401. There is easy parking in the cemetery itself, or on the street. We'll gather just inside the entrance nearest the Battleground/Fisher Ave. intersection.
