SUNDAY AFTERNOON NATURE WALK ALONG THE
ATLANTIC AND YADKIN RAIL TRAIL ON THE FUTURE DOWNTOWN GREENWAY
Sunday, May 21, 2:00 pm
As you know, our winter has been quite wet and resulted in this walk being rained out twice. Fingers crossed that the third time will be a charm and the sun will shine on us.
Hopefully you have read about this walk in our earlier Nature Notes, so we'll be brief. Basically we'll walk, stroll, amble, saunter, well, you get the idea that we'll take our time seeing what we can see or hear along this old rail corridor. The city has improved the trail with some fine, compacted gravel so it is level and dry.
We'll look for winter straggler birds as well as spring migrants. And spring plants will be in full bloom. No telling what we'll see along College Branch, the small stream that parallels the rail corridor. We'll definitely see some 18th century bridges across the stream.
We'll begin at the former rail crossing on Guilford Ave. There is street and lot parking there. We'll head west just a bit to check out the neat sculpture project (Cairns Course) then head back east and see how far we get. A different kind of nature walk to be sure, but we think an interesting one. We should be done by 4:00 pm. Please join us.
