Sunday Afternoon Nature Walk
Sunday, April 16, 2023, 2-4 pm
The Gateway Research Park, North Campus is part of the joint millennial campus between UNC Greensboro and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. The formal address is 5900 Summit Avenue, Browns Summit, NC.
The 75-acre campus has everything needed to make an interesting and educational Sunday Nature Walk. Piedmont Bird Club has placed approximately 25 bird boxes on the campus, some are along the stream running through the campus, some are along the meadow and some are along a wooded road. Targeted species are Eastern Bluebirds, Carolina Chickadees and Brown-headed Nuthatches, but there are plenty of other species present as well. In the meadow we will see ample evidence of the pollinator research happening at Gateway in all the active bee hives. This is seeing in person the research we heard about described by our November speaker, Lexi Hoopman, and written about by Megan Damico.
The walk will be primarily along level, mostly paved land, though we will walk into the meadow as well. We will meet in the parking lot accessed through the gate to the right. Bathroom facilities are available. Participants should wear appropriate shoes and clothing for the weather of the day. Water and a snack would be helpful, too. The walk will last approximately two hours.
For those wanting to carpool to the walk site, please come to the Friendly Shopping Center in the Whole Foods parking lot close to Friendly Ave. Arrive by 1:15 p.m. for a 1:30 p.m. departure. We should be back by about 4:00 p.m.
