Sassafras albidum is a small native tree found throughout the southeast growing in a wide variety of sites; although they grow best in well-drained, acidic soils. They are drought tolerant. The leaves turn to a beautiful orange color in the fall. They flower in early spring providing nectar sources for pollinators and they have fruit that will ripen in late summer providing a food source for wildlife. Sassafras is also an important host for several native moth and butterfly species.
